Doing some Pet sitting in California

We took care of two sweet kitties last month for a week near La Jolla, California. Here is a photo of Eddie. _DSC0597 It was a nice break from the house and the routine.  The sea lions, seals and cormorants were all having babies in La Jolla this February.  We drove down to see them.  Here are some sea lions who are lying on the rocks in the sun.  sea lions la jolla Feb 2018 netsea lion nursing feb 2018And here is a mom still nursing her pup.

Here is a photograph of a cormorant sitting on her just hatched babies.  I love seeing new born  animals in a natural environment. bandt cormornds nest feb 2018 netThis is an interesting adjunct to pet sitting in Europe.  There are people in the USA who want pet sitters too.  We have another pet sit lined up for Portland next month for 6 days with 2 sweet kitties.

I am lining up our summer pet sitting schedule and it is almost finished.  We have two people that we sat for last summer who we will sit for again.  Plus 4 other new people to meet and some new pets to love.  We will go on the Baltic cruise then pet sit until the beginning of Oct.  It should be another fun summer.

Good eating is inexpensive in Popotla Fishing Village, Rosarito,Mexico

Today we returned to the Popotla Fishing Village to collect some shells and purchase some fresh fish for lunch.  It is a fascinating place.  Many fishing families offer fresh fish for sale; some is on tables, some still in the boats, and in one case a we saw a pile of fish on a pile of ice in the back of a very much used van. We purchased a half-kilo of shrimp for $6 and a small cod (that the fisherman cleaned for us) for $1.  On the way home we stopped by our favorite small Mexican restaurant to purchase a cup of re fried beans, 4 fresh flour tortillas and 2 home made flan desserts for $8 more .  We went home and I made garlic shrimp and grilled fish for lunch. And there was still shrimp left over for 2 more meals. Yum, yum!  We have mainly eaten fish during the month and a half that we have been here.  It is fresh, inexpensive and plentiful.

While we were there we saw two healthy and grown up sea lions.  They were waiting for the leftovers from the fishermen.  Here are a couple of pictures of himsea lion face adult sea lion  Here are some pelicans also waiting for some tasty handouts.popotla pelicanspopotla village

A sandpiper, and crashing waves and sick sea lion pups

Sadly, this has been a record year for starving sea lion pups who come to shore because they are tired and hungry.  We have seen 2 here at our beach. The first one we found dead on the beach a couple of days later.  It is difficult  here because the nearest rescue is in Ensenada so there is little that can be done for these sweet babies.   Today,we sent a donation to the Orange county rescue service that has 88 sea lion pups in its shelter ( there have been 1800 rescued off the coast of California since Jan. of this year).  FYI  here is a link to the story http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/16/sea-lion-pups-stranded-california_n_6876076.html  . I could not bring myself to take a photo of the last stranded pup we saw on Sat.  I just hope he rested , got back out to sea, and found some food.

Here are some happier photos that I took in the last couple of days.  It has been overcast here at the beach , but even when it is grey and somewhat stormy the ocean and its creatures are beautiful.  Here is one of the sand pipers standing on one leg, they seem to like to do that. sandpiper 5x7 small_edited-1Here is a photograph of the crashing waves on the rock point at the southern end of our beach. slow crashing waves 5x7 small_edited-1Since the waves have been more rough the last few days we have seen more sea weed wash up on shore.  Here is a photo of a large seaweed pod.seaweed on shore  And I wanted  to leave you with a sunset photograph taken on a cloudy day.black sun stream 5x7 small
