Last Night in Assisi; went to see the Porziuncola and watched a rehearsal for Calendimaggio

So what did we do??? Porziuncola is a small church located within the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli . This is the little church that St. Francis rebuilt around 1211 and it became the mother house of the Order of Friars Minor. The large basilica was built around it.

The churches are located in the valley below the old hill town of Assisi so we took a city bus down to see the shrine.  They do not allow photographs inside the church but if you google the basilica or Porziuncola you will see the small church inside of a very large church.  It was a very moving visit for me because St. Francis was a man that I admire.Assisi Italy ourlady gold smallAssisi Italy mary queen of angels small  When we got back to the old town, people were rehearsing for the big May celebration that will be happening in Assisi next weekend called; Calendimaggio.   This is a celebration of Spring.  People in Assisi dress up in medieval costumes and there are many contests between the upper townspeople  and the lower townspeople.  This rehearsal that happened today included  drummers,  archers and cross bow men.  There were lovely ladies and  the noblemen and women parading in costume.  They walked  through town and had a demonstration of dancing, drumming, flag throwing and a cross bow target contest.  It was very festive.  Here are some photographs that I took.Assisi Italy medieval drummers 5x7 copyAssisi Italy medieval women smallAssisi Italy medieval couples smallAssisi Italy medieval archers small Assisi Italy medieval flags in air smallAssisi Italy medieval crossbow small I I will end this post on Assisi with the sweetest photograph of all; the little ladiesAssisi Italy 3 children 5x7 small
